Meaning - to raise the price on something
Example: The store marked up the price of the jacket I wanted.
* Mark down
Meaning - to lower the price of something
Example: There was a significant mark down on the sofa, so I bought it.
* Mark out
Meaning - to make boundaries around a certain area
Example: The construction workers marked out the area that they were demolishing.
* Mark off
Meaning - to cross off something that has been completed
Example: Each time I found an item in the store, I marked it off my list.
A phrasal verb is either:
* a verb and a preposition
* a verb and an adverb
* a verb, an adverb, and a preposition
Phrasal verbs are often used in informal speech, between family and/or friends. They are used very commonly in the English language.
The best thing to do is to memorize them. It isn't necessary to know all of the phrasal verbs to be able to have a conversation. You can use other verbs to communicate the same information. Although, it is important to at least commit them to memory so that when you hear them, you will understand what the person is saying.
Did you know there are several meanings for the English phrasal verb "stand up"?
1) to lift oneself to a standing position
Example: You have to stand up when the bride walks down the aisle to honor her.
2) to support something
Example: Jose says he will stand up for his country during times of war.
3) to not follow through with a plan to meet someone
Example: I had a date with Dave but he stood me up and never came.
nod off - to fall asleep
Examples -
He was nodding off while he was driving so I had to talk to him to wake him up completely.
The dog started to nod off while she was walking and her owner had to carry her home.
