As far as I know the iPhone doesn't have an instant messaging application, but you can use a web service like meebo. Go to www.meebo.com in the Safari web browser on your iPhone and log into your preferred messenger service like MSN, Yahoo!, aim or GTalk.

I searched over the internet and seems like there aren't iPhones in Japan available yet, I thought about you could do what we do here: to buy an unlocked iPhone from the US, but for my surprise Japan doesn't use the GSM network service. I'm sending you a link where you can track news about iPhones in Japan and it says there will be 3G iPhones soon:
