Interview with Paul McCartney

Interview with Paul McCartney

Interviewer: It’s a great honor and a privilege to have you on the show.

Paul: Thank you, very much.

Interviewer: And..uhh..I like this record. This record really is great.

Paul: Thank you.

Interviewer: I mean..uh..it..it..it’s uh..the first track “Dance Tonight”.

Paul: Yeah

Interviewer: And people dancing a little bit.

Paul: Yeah

Interviewer: The mandolin. Is..is that…when did you first start with the mandolin?

Paul: I..just before Christmas. When I bought one in a shop. Umm…I asked the man if he had any left-handed instruments. He said, “I got a mandolin, would you like to buy it?”

Interviewer: Yeah.

Paul: I said, “Yeah.”

Interviewer: Good stuff.

Paul: I bought it right there and then. And then I tried to learn it because I had no idea how to do it. But uh…this song came out of it.

Interviewer: Is it true that when the Beatles first formed, you went to a man in Bootle who taught you the chord of B7?

Paul: Yeah.

Interviewer: Is that right?

Paul: We knew A…E but we didn’t know B7.

Interviewer: Hmmm.

Paul: So we made a voyage across the town.

Interviewer: Yeah

Paul: Found him and said, “Oh great guru, do you know B7?”

Interviewer: Yeah

Paul: He said, “Yeah” do do do do do

Interviewer: And the world…the world…the musical world changed at that point. He didn’t realize that. He didn’t realize what he was doing. That’s very interesting though…left-handed instruments, I mean do you find that you are always seeking out a left-handed this or a left-handed that?

Paul: Yeah really, yeah because I don’t play right-handed ones.

Audience: hahahaha

Interviewer: Uh…right handed piano?

Paul: Oh, okay, you got me there.

Interviewer: See here. So now I’ve got uh…the other thing it didn’t it…its that its got a very good dance flavor to it. Uh…in what I would call a traditional way. Who locks their knees up at home?

Paul: Yeah, you know, that was one of the things, once we got the mandolin, uh, it was Christmas and I was just in the kitchen…dik-a-pom-pickin….playin’ away. And, yeah, it was a bit of a hoedown feel.

Interviewer: Yeah

Paul: Umm…people would gather around and “hoe”.

Interviewer: Hoe..exactly.

Paul: To it.

Interviewer: Memory….exactly…now what…listening to “Memories Almost Full” you can hear, I mean one of the things that I suppose that people have made…one of the things that you have done that has irritated people is you’ll write a song and you’ll do this really simple thing. And everyone is going…that was so simple...why didn’t we think of that? And you keep doing that. What inspires you to keep writing?

Paul: I don’t know, you know, it’s just something I love to do. And, I started to do it when I was about 14 in Liverpool and ummm….met up with John. Turned out he….he was doing a similar thing. So, it just became something I just fell in love with and I couldn’t stop it if I tried now.

Interviewer: No.

Paul: So, you know the great excitement for me is just sitting down on the piano or with a guitar and just trying to think of something…a tune, a melody, uh…some words. And I just love it, you know, it’s like a hobby.

Interviewer: And you never stop do you? You never stop trying to fi…fi..

Paul: Well..I can stop now..

Interviewer: For these few moments..

Paul: Just for this second.

Interviewer: This few moments the way it is…while we’re chatting.

Paul: Well, actually….

Interviewer: It’s another one he’s come up with.

Paul: I can’t stop (music) …I can’t stop Jules…I’m playing the bloody piano!!!

Interviewer: Did we get…have you called that….that will be out tomorrow.

Paul: That’s it…that’s the next one.

Interviewer: hahah I can’t stop playing the bloody piano. Back…it’s Jules…doo…that’ll get the answer. That’s the other thing. Your band is very good. Now that’s one of the things on the sound of this record which I…. which is one of the reasons it sounds good…it sounds like a band is playing. And it sounds like that ...it’s got a valdecet…I Beatley sort of sound to it, that your band has given it. Is that deliberately?

Paul: Well, I mean, you know, yo….you…when we started Wings I kind of tried to avoid the Beatles thing, umm….because I was starting something new. But now I don’t care. I mean, I play a lot of Beatle songs when we go live. And I think...it’s… it’s kind of a lot of it’s my style anyway. So, rather than have everyone else knick it…you see I’ll knick it back…

Interviewer: Do it yourself

Paul: Knick it back..

Interviewer: Lots of people have knicked it.

Paul: Yeah

Interviewer: Well now…

Paul: (music) I can’t stop now

Interviewer: What’s that song….

Paul: (music) Sorry…I don’t do interviews….Jules!!!!!

Interviewer: Don’t do interviews Jules….that’s fantastic!! You set the pace so…

Paul: No, it’s actually normal, it’s seaside.

Interviewer: Actually, well…I believe, you know this is true….when I was about 10, me and my mother, between us, we learnt “Lady Madonna”.

Paul: Did you?

Interviewer:Yes. Now, later on in the show, would you be prepared to play it?

Paul: I would love to play it. For your mom?

Interviewer: Yes

Paul: Yeah

Interviewer: We will be looking forward…I can’t wait…it’s one of my favorite songs…what’s the latest one that you’re gonna be playing for us tonight though.

Paul: Uh, “I Got a Feeling”.

Interviewer: Ah

Paul: You like that?

Interviewer: I like that song very much. That is a Beatles song as well.

Paul: It is.

Interviewer: Yes, I thought so, isn’t it?

Paul: Proves what I said.

Interviewer: It proves….for once and for all that “I Got a Feeling” is going to be the next song from Paul McCartney. Thank you for being our guest very much. So Paul McCartney we are looking forward to hearing more from…..
