Podcast 11 Phrases or words that invert and have a different meaning. gum free - free gum, going out - outgoing, load up -upload

Hello. This is Missy from Blabbinit. I would like to welcome you to our site today.

In todays podcast I would like to explain to you about words or phrases that when they are inverted or flipped around take on a totally different meaning. I have 3 examples of this today.

The first group is:

Gum free and free gum.

Gum free means that it is an area that does not allow gum.
An example sentence is: I am sorry sir, you cannot chew gum here because this is a gum free zone.

Free gum means that the gum is being offered without a charge.
An example sentence is: Would you like some free gum? It won't cost you a penny.

The second group is:

Going out and outgoing

Going out means that you are going out of your house to do some sort of activity. Perhaps you are going to see a movie or eat dinner or even go to the store or to the gym.
An example sentence is: I have to find someone to watch my kids because my husband and I are going out tonight.

Outgoing describes a person who is very energetic and makes friends easily.
An example sentence is: Even though Tina moved to a new school, she made friends very easily since she has a very outgoing personality.

Our third group is:

Load up and upload

Load up is what we do when we are putting many things in one place. For example a truck or a place for storage.
An example sentence is: Can you load up the truck with the boxes so that it is ready for the delivery?

Upload is a technical term related to computers. When a computer is using the internet it has an upload speed or a speed that the computer sends out information to other computers.
An example sentence is: Can you please tell me the upload speed for your computer?

I realize that these words can get complicated and with just a simple change of the words a whole new meaning can take place. We will try to make more podcasts of these tricky words so that you can get more accustomed to them through explanation and memorization.
