Podcast 23 Visiting the Doctor
Hello and welcome to Blabbinit. This is Missy coming to you from California. I hope your day is going well. Thank you for listening in today. We appreciate that you have chosen to listen to our podcast to practice your English.
Today's podcast will be on visiting the doctor. When you need to visit the doctor, first you need to make an appointment. You will have to call the office to find the next available time for you to go in. They will give you a day and a time for your appointment.
When it is time to go to the doctor you should always plan to leave the house a little earlier than you think you should. Traffic can always hold you up unexpectedly. You also never know if you will have to fill out any forms once you arrive to the doctor's office.
When you enter the office, the first thing you need to do is check in. Typically they will have a sign-in sheet at the front desk. You just go to the desk and sign your name. They will tell you about any forms you may need to fill out.
If it is your first visit, they will also ask you for your medical insurance card and perhaps an identification card. They will make a copy of the cards and put the copy in your file and then return the cards to you.
You can then have a seat and wait until you are called. Waiting in the waiting room is always a pleasurable experience. hahaha
A nurse will come to the door and call you to the back when it is your turn. She will usually bring you to the scale to get your weight and then take you to the room. In the room, the nurse will ask you for the reason of your visit and then she will take your temperature and blood pressure. She will then tell you that the doctor will be in shortly. She will put your file outside of the door so that the doctor can grab it when he enters. Now it is time to wait again.
You will hear a little knock on the door, then the doctor will enter. He will ask you the reason for your visit and then will check your heart with his stethoscope. He usually checks your eyes, nose, lymph nodes and he will tell you to say ahhhhh so you open your mouth so he can check inside.
You will then discuss with the doctor about why you have come to the office. He will tell you if he has to run further tests or get x-rays or do anything else. If you need medicine, he will fill out a prescription and hand it to you. He will also tell you if you need to schedule another appointment.
Before you leave, you will stop by the front desk to pay any fees or to schedule your next appointment. Don't forget to fill your prescription at your local pharmacy before you get home if you need any medication.
Going to the doctor's office is not necessarily a pleasurable event, but it is necessary.
