Podcast 6 A story of a typical holiday, a day off work!
Hello and welcome to Blabbinit.com. This is Missy from southern California. I would like to make a podcast today which describes a typical day. I will tell you about my day today. Listen carefully so that you can hear the little things that you might not hear in your English classes or while you are studying English in a more traditional way.
Today I woke up at 7:45am. I was lucky because I didn’t have to work today since it is a holiday. Thank you President Washington! Anyway, I got up and took a shower and got dressed. Afterward, I said goodbye to my husband and the kids but I realized that I had misplaced my keys. I couldn’t find them anywhere. I looked around the house for a few minutes but I couldn’t find them. I asked my husband if I could use his keys instead. He handed me his keys and I went out the door and got into the car. I started driving to a restaurant where I was going to meet my mom for breakfast. I arrived at the restaurant at 8:55am. I was supposed to meet her at 9 o’clock. I waited for about 20 minutes and my mom never showed up. Finally my cell phone rang and it was her.
She said, “Missy, where are you?”
I replied, “I am at the restaurant. Where are you?”
She told me that I wasn’t supposed to meet her at the restaurant and that she was waiting for me at the supermarket. I couldn’t believe that I had totally forgotten where I was going to meet her.
I hurried to the supermarket, which was only about a 4 minute drive, and I found my mom waiting there for me. She decided that we would go to eat at another restaurant and she followed me in her car.
We entered the restaurant and ordered our food. It cost $8.90 for the food and a drink. My mom offered to foot the bill. This is an expression that we use which means that she decided that she would pay for the whole bill. We decided that we would split one meal. This means that she would eat one half and I would eat the other half. Most of the time when you go to a restaurant they give you so much food that you cannot finish it anyway. We had a really nice time together at the restaurant. We talked about many things and we had the chance to catch up with each other.
She had to leave after we ate, and I was still not in the mood for going home since I was getting a nice break away from the kids. I decided to go shopping for myself. I needed some socks, shoes and some jeans.
I went into several different stores looking for a nice pair of shoes. I entered one store that is almost like a factory full of shoes. It was so overwhelming because I had no idea where to even start looking. The lady that was working there asked me if I needed help and I told her that I was fine and just wanted to look around. I passed by her again and she asked me where I got the purse that I was using. I told her that I got it when I went to Peru.
She said, “Really? No way! I am from Peru!.”
We had a really nice conversation. She was a really sweet girl. I told her that I was trying to learn Spanish and that is the reason that I went there. She talked a lot about the differences between Los Angeles and Lima. To my surprise, these two huge cities seem to have a lot in common. She stated that Los Angeles has really nice places like Beverly Hills, but also really dangerous places as well. Likewise, Lima has very nice places like Miraflores but it also has very dangerous places. It is interesting to see that two cities, that are worlds apart, are so similar.
I left that shoe store, unable to find anything that I really loved and went to another shoe store. It was amazing because when I walked into the store, I saw someone working there that I knew, that I had worked with before. She helped me look around for the kind of shoes that would look the best on me and we talked for a while as I was trying on different shoes. It was really nice to see her again. The shoes that I picked were around $60 dollars. A high price to pay, but the shoes were really comfortable. She took me over to the cashier and charged me for the shoes. She told me that the price was $29.68. I said, “Why?”
She told me not to worry, that she gave me a discount. I am not going to complain about that! It was really nice! I told her thanks and left the store.
After that, I started walking over to a clothing store. In front of the store, there were people standing behind a table. They had voter registration forms and also petitions. They ask everyone who is entering the store if they would like to sign the petitions in order to get a certain bill put on the ballot during the elections. If the majority of the people vote yes on the bill then it will then become a law. They asked me to sign a few petitions, which I signed and then I entered the store. There were so many different clothes in the store and it was nice for me just to look around and enjoy the atmosphere. It is not often that I get to go shopping. I knew that I really needed a pair of jeans. I looked around the store and found three pairs of jeans that I really liked. I took them into the changing room and tried on all three pairs. I decided that two of them looked the best on me, but I only wanted to buy one. I chose one pair and bought it. Luckily they were really cheap. The truth is, I never buy myself new clothes since most of the money goes to buying stuff for the kids.
After that I stopped by a Mexican restaurant and I got myself a nice burrito! Mmmmmm. I love burritos, especially carne asada with guacamole. Oh, and don’t forget the onions and salsa. I brought it home and showed my kids my new shoes and jeans. They all loved them and thought they looked good on me. They told me that they missed me while I was out.
Now I am sitting in my computer chair and I just ate my last bite of the burrito. It was delicious! Well, you have all heard a typical day for me, without work!
